The American actress Courteney Cox (Monica Geller in the television series Friends) was the first person to use the word period on screen in a TV commercial for Tampax. Believe it or not: we’re talking about the year 1985. She was 21 back then. Watch the original commercial on YouTube.
Now Cox (58) is going viral with a split-screen parody on this very first tampon commercial. Dressed in the same sort of leotard (why do tampon commercials so often take place in a gym or dance studio?) she is candid about the ‘benefits’ of menopause. ‘Still using pads?’ is changed into ‘Still getting hot flashes?’ She’s clearly not a fan of this new phase in life. ‘Menopause will eat you alive. It’s horrible. Plus, you get the added bonus of drier skin, and getting bald patches!’
Cox isn’t the only 50-plus celebrity who has been frank about menopause. Earlier Salma Hayek and Naomi Watts opened up about their experiences. Watts even started a wellness brand for menopausal women, says Yahoo. Whoopi Goldberg did too, only for menstruators with cramps. Curious to know which celebs have shared their menstrual stories? Find out here.
