Crocheting, knitting, embroidering: handicraft is hip again. Amy Washington from Kentucky – founder of handicraft label MamaBear – makes quick dry, washable and colourful menstrual pads from cotton flannel.

She’s not the only one. On Etsy.com, numerous examples of women producing cloth pads and panty liners can be found, mostly from Canada, Australia and the USA.

How to wash your pads

• Rinse the pad in cold water (or store in an airtight bag until you’re home).
• Soak in in a bucket of cold water for a day. Optional: add some laundry detergent or baking soda.
• Just wash it in the machine, together with your other laundry (check the washing instructions for recommended temperature). Don’t add any fabric softener.
• Leave it to dry horizontally so there’s no need to iron.
